Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between 7.4kW and 22kW home chargers?
7.4kW chargers operate on single-phase power (most commonly available in homes) and deliver about 40–50km of driving range per hour of charging.
22kW chargers require three-phase power (less common in homes) and can deliver around 120–140km of driving range per hour of charging, provided your car supports it.
How fast can I charge my EV?
With a 7.4kW charger: ~40–50km range per hour of charge.
With a 22kW charger: ~120–140km range per hour of charge.
Note: Many EVs are limited to 11kW AC charging due to their onboard charger, regardless of the higher output of the wall unit.
Can I install a 22kW charger at home?
Only if your property has or can be upgraded to three-phase power. Most NZ homes have single-phase, compatible with 7.4kW chargers.
Three-phase upgrades can be costly and require an assessment by an electrician.
Are these chargers universal for all EV brands?
Most modern residential chargers use a Type 2 socket or cable, compatible with the majority of EVs sold in NZ and Australia.
Always check your vehicle’s charging capabilities (socket type and max AC charge rate) before selecting a charger.
How long does a full charge take?
Charging time depends on battery capacity, the starting battery level, and the charger’s power. On average:
7.4kW: 4–12 hours for a full charge.
22kW: 1–4 hours for a full charge (vehicle permitting).
What installation work is needed?
Chargers must be installed by a licensed electrician. The installer will assess your switchboard/capacity and may recommend upgrades.
Safety features like circuit breakers, Residual Current Devices (RCDs), and proper cabling must be installed.
Are home EV chargers safe?
Modern home chargers include overcurrent protection, ground fault detection, and temperature monitoring for safety.
Compliance with local electrical standards is mandatory.
Are government incentives or rebates available?
Check with your local council or government for the latest schemes or grants to support charger installation.
Do I need any special apps or features?
Many “smart” chargers offer Wi-Fi/Bluetooth for remote monitoring, scheduling, and integration with your home energy system, but basic models work without smart features.
Can renters install EV chargers?
Typically requires landlord approval; installation should be performed by a qualified electrician. Portable chargers that plug into regular outlets may be alternatives but are slower.
Will my electricity bill increase?
Yes, electricity usage will increase proportionately to your driving and charging habits. Some retailers offer EV-friendly tariffs or recommend charging at off-peak rates for lower costs.
